My Flashcards

Definition

Meaning

To fulfill a customer order by shipping goods directly from the supplier or manufacturer to the customer, bypassing the retailer's own inventory.

A retail fulfillment method where a seller accepts payment from a customer for a product that is then shipped directly from a third party (often a wholesaler or manufacturer) to the customer. The seller never physically handles the product.

Linguistics

Semantic Notes

Primarily a business model verb (to drop-ship) but can be used as a noun (drop-shipping/dropshipping). Often associated with online retail and low-capital start-ups. The hyphen is increasingly dropped in informal business writing.

Dialectal Variation

British vs American Usage

Differences

No significant difference in meaning. The unhyphenated form 'dropship' is slightly more common in US business contexts. The practice and terminology are identical.

Connotations

Neutral to slightly informal in business contexts. Can have negative connotations if implying a lack of quality control or inventory oversight.

Frequency

Equally common in both varieties due to the global nature of e-commerce.

Learning

Memory Aids

Mnemonic

Think of a retailer DROPPING the shipping task directly onto the supplier. The product 'drops' from the supplier's hands straight into the shipping process.

Conceptual Metaphor

BUSINESS IS A CHAIN OF CUSTODY. Drop-shipping is 'short-circuiting' or 'bypassing a link' in that chain.

Watch out

Common Pitfalls

Translation Traps (for Russian speakers)

  • Avoid literal translation ('бросать корабль'). The closest conceptual equivalent is 'прямая поставка от производителя' or using the borrowed term 'дропшиппинг'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using it as a synonym for any shipping (it's a specific model). Incorrect: 'I will drop-ship this to you tomorrow.' (If you are the sender, you are just 'shipping' it). Correct: 'My supplier will drop-ship this to you.'

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

All forms are seen. 'Drop-ship' (hyphenated) is common for the verb. 'Dropshipping' (one word) is very common for the noun/gerund describing the model. 'Drop ship' (two words) is also acceptable.

Liability can be complex. Typically, the retailer (who sold the item) is legally responsible to the customer, but they will have agreements with their drop-ship supplier to handle replacements/refunds. The customer usually deals with the retailer, not the supplier.

The retailer has little to no control over inventory, shipping speed, packaging, and product quality. This can lead to customer service issues. Profit margins are also often lower than with traditional inventory models.

Yes, but it introduces complexity: higher shipping costs, customs duties, longer delivery times, and more complicated returns. The retailer must manage customer expectations carefully.
