My Flashcards

Definition

Meaning

The branch of lexicology concerned with the study of concepts and the words or linguistic forms used to name them (the principle of 'name to thing').

A linguistic approach that starts from a concept, idea, or meaning and investigates the different words, terms, or expressions used to designate it, both within a language and across languages. It contrasts with semasiology, which studies the meanings of words.

Linguistics

Semantic Notes

The term is primarily used within the field of linguistics and lexical semantics. Its core is the study of designation and naming. It is often discussed in opposition to semasiology.

Dialectal Variation

British vs American Usage

Differences

No significant usage differences. The spelling is identical.

Connotations

Purely technical and academic in both varieties.

Frequency

Equally rare in both UK and US academic contexts, used almost exclusively by linguists and lexicographers.
